Founded in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, Auburn University has been a cornerstone of both the city of Auburn and the state of Alabama for over 150 years. The university boasts many iconic landmarks, starting with Samford Hall, a striking administration building dating back to the 1880s. For art lovers, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, which opened in 2003, has become a cultural hub. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Donald E. Davis Arboretum, a 14-acre garden featuring native Alabama plants, from majestic oaks to vibrant azaleas and unique pitcher plants.
Auburn University also gives back to the local community through programs like the Kreher Preserve & Nature Center, an educational outreach program that features six miles of walking trails, a pond, butterfly gardens and a waterfall. It’s a great spot for outdoor activities and environmental education. The Southeastern Raptor Center, another outreach program, offers educational shows about birds of prey at the Edgar B. Carter Amphitheatre. Finally, Ag Heritage Park, a scenic 30-acre space on campus, celebrates Auburn’s agricultural roots and provides a beautiful backdrop for university events.
